Teaching and Learning

Getting ready for Semester 2
Over the last two weeks, our teachers have been taking a day away from the classroom to collaboratively plan for next term. As always, they have a laser-like focus on what students need to know and be able to do. By unpacking the teaching and learning required very specifically, teachers can make the adjustments required to ensure all students have the greatest opportunity of success.
As I lead teachers through the moderating processes during our fortnightly curriculum meetings and on these planning days, I am always reminded of how lucky we are to have the staff we do. There is so much expertise within each area of the school and the teamwork each year level displays in working collaboratively to ensure consistency in the implementation of the curriculum across classes is outstanding.
Prep – Term 2
The Prep students have been working hard to develop their writing skills. After completing their dictation sentence, they put on their imaginary teacher glasses and use a red pen to edit their work. They’ve been learning to identify missing finger spaces, correct reversed letters, and check their spelling. The students are really enjoying the independence and taking pride in taking ownership of their learning.

Prep D have been having some fun in the sun practising their number formation. Taking our learning outside has brought lots of smiles and excitement as we used chalk to form numbers in creative ways. The students enjoyed the fresh air while strengthening their fine motor skills and developing confidence in writing numbers correctly. It was a wonderful way to combine movement, play, and learning and turning a simple maths activity into an engaging outdoor experience for everyone.

To explore the concept of family in our HASS unit, the students used their water-colour palettes and painted vibrant portraits of the people who matter most to them. As each brushstroke dried, classrooms filled with conversations about parents, grandparents, siblings, and pets, highlighting both shared traditions and unique quirks. Comparing the finished pieces, children discovered that while every family looks different, love, support, and belonging remain constant threads. The activity fostered creativity, empathy, and a deeper appreciation of diversity.
In Science, Preps have been exploring different materials and their properties. Through hands-on investigations, students have been using their senses to sort, describe, and compare objects made from wood, plastic, metal, and fabric. They’ve enjoyed discovering how materials feel, bend, or stretch and learning how these properties help us decide which materials to use to specific purposes.
