Teaching and Learning

What’s going on in classrooms this week?

This week’s year level spotlight is going to shine on Year 2 and 4, so let’s have a look at what they have been getting up to.

Year 4

Science - Excursion – Exploring Mangroves and Moreton Bay

In Week 3, our Year 4 students ventured to the Wynnum and Manly foreshore to take part in the Mangroves and the Environment program, delivered by the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre. This hands-on learning experience supported our current Science unit, Ready, Set, Grow, which explores life cycles and interdependence in ecosystems.

Throughout the day, students stepped into the shoes of Junior Ecologists, investigating the vital role mangrove ecosystems play in supporting a wide variety of life. The program was split between time aboard the Inspiration vessel on Moreton Bay and an exploration of the local mangrove forests.

Onboard, students used a plankton trawl to observe feeding relationships and marine life cycles. While on land, they identified local mangrove species, explored their unique adaptations, and considered how plants and animals depend on one another for survival.

It was a fantastic day of discovery that deepened students' understanding of local environments and the delicate balance within natural ecosystems.

Year 2

Term 3 in Year 2 is an exciting but busy one with lots of great learning planned throughout the term.

English

Students have dived into English with great enthusiasm by exploring poetry together. Students have been learning to identify the poetic devices of rhyme, repetition, alliteration and onomatopoeia, techniques that poets use to entertain the reader. Students are preparing to write and perform their own poem at the end of the term.

Maths

In maths, students have begun this term investigating the fractions of halves, quarters and eighths in shapes and collections. Students will continue to consolidate their knowledge of place value of numbers up to 1000 and practice strategies for adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers. They will also apply these strategies to problem solving situations. This term we will continue to work on our number fact fluency, adding numbers to 20. Students will continue developing multiplication and division strategies and are beginning to build their fluency recalling the 2s and 10s multiplication facts.

HASS

As part of their history learning, students are learning how to identify and describe how and why technology has changed over time and how this has impacted people’s lives. Students will explore how technology has changed the way people wash their clothes, cook, communicate, entertain themselves and use transport. Last week the students were lucky enough to visit the Queensland Museum where the museum shared their old toy collection with us. Students were able to share their knowledge of what old toys were made of and how they were made and make comparisons to their own toys.

Technologies - Design

This term the students will engage in design technologies where they will learn the attitudes and ways of working of a designer. They will apply design principles and thinking to make a moving toy. Stay tuned for our creations!
