Teaching and Learning
What’s going on in classrooms this week?
This week’s spotlight is on our Prep and Year 1 cohorts! Let’s take a look at the fantastic learning experiences they’ve been engaging in.
Prep
Science
The highlight of Term 3 was the Nudgee Beach excursion. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to apply everything they had learned about living and non-living things. Under bright blue skies, all the Prep students became little nature scientists, making predictions about which animals they might see. They then rolled up their sleeves and set off to explore, searching for and identifying a variety of animals. After such an exciting day of learning and discovery, our young scientists were well and truly exhausted on the bus ride back to school, which became another highlight of the excursion.

Year 1
Science
This term in Science, Year 1 students have been learning all about habitats. On their excursion to Moreton Bay, they became true Habitat Heroes! Students explored life in underwater habitats during a boat trip and then investigated the intertidal zone along the bay. They had a wonderful time discovering the creatures that live there and learning what a healthy habitat needs to thrive.

English
This term in English, Year 1 students have been reciting poems to an audience. They have been learning about the language and text features of a poem and the purpose of a poem. They enjoyed performing with confidence, using their voices and gestures to emphasise meaning.

Mathematics
In Maths, our Year 1 students have been exploring the concept of time. They are learning to read o’clock and half past on analogue clocks and are beginning to understand durations of hours and half hours to solve simple time problems. Students have also enjoyed discovering how to measure the area of a space using different non-standard units, a fun and hands-on way to build their understanding of measurement.
