Thank you for your support during the uncertainty of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. I need to commend our entire community for the care, common sense and calm that has been on display since this time last week. For those whose homes and lives have been impacted, our thoughts are with you. We are pleased to report that our school has no damage of note, which means that our school can continue as a place of certainty for our children and community alike.
We held our newsletter distribution over until today to ensure only essential information was being communicated last week. Now that we are back, our priority continues to be children learning. Learning in a secure and safe environment with their teachers who know them well. There will be an extra layer of support this week and ongoingly, as we recognise many families are managing or recovering from flooding waters.
Do you need support?
Please ask as we have a school community ready to help. You may do this via your classroom teacher, directly to leadership, to your P&C or via admin@windsorss.eq.edu.au
NAPLAN- Year 3 and Year 5
Please do not worry as we have plenty of time for this National testing process. The window for this can be extended if required. We will decide tomorrow (Tuesday) if we proceed as planned this Wednesday, which at this point is highly likely, or we may hold over until next week. Data collection and information will be shared with Year 3 and Year 5 tomorrow.
International Women’s Day
Although TC Alfred has taken most of our recent attention, I didn’t want International Women’s Day to pass without acknowledgement. I want to say thank you to the incredible women right across our staff at Windsor State School, with special mention to my leadership team.
Nikki, Gannon – Business Manager. Nikki has worked closely with me since last year to ensure fidelity of our many school systems. These include financial, facilities and HR processes that are essential to the effective management of our large primary school. She also oversees our fantastic team in the front office – Anna, Linda, Ruth and Sara.
Lesley Wallace - Head of Inclusion. Lesley leads herself and her team with positive intent each day. Her vast experience and knowledge of students with disabilities has allowed Windsor to boast and maintain a highly effective team of Personalised Learning teachers. Her ability to connect with families is also a gift to her our school.
Lisa Heard – Head of Department- Curriculum. If it needs to be read, Lisa has read it. Lisa is an outstanding leader of Curriculum with a deep passion for the currency and knowledge of best practice when teaching and learning. Teachers are fully supported by Lisa each week and our student outcomes are a direct result of Lisa’s work over numerous years.
Roxie O’Donoghue – Deputy Principal Junior School. While she could easily lead her own school, Roxie continues to dedicate herself to Windsor. Roxie steps up with confidence and accuracy with her informed decision making each day. Her deep knowledge of our school and strong connection with staff, ensures that we are a child first/people first kind of school.
I am privileged to work alongside such professionals who model compassion, resolve, strength of character, high intellect and an outward facing approach to their areas of expertise. Importantly for me, they also love their jobs and know how to laugh, which I think filters right through to our students.
Yours in Education

The first such opportunity will be during Week 8 where “Kindness” will be recognised by teachers via the presentation of a Windsor Warrior card for students that are shining brightly.

We know that parking around schools in all metropolitan areas in Brisbane and more broadly, poses a challenge. However, in order that our neighbours are considered and treated with common courtesy, we kindly ask that anyone seeking a park in the streets adjacent to Windsor State School always consider a couple of key things.
1. Please take heed of driveways and leave these spaces clear so that local residents can come and go as they require.
2. Please take heed of all parking signage and avoid parking in no-standing zones
We know that the community appreciate those parents and carers who think about others and show courtesy and respect in their driving behaviours.
We continue with a reduced number of pick up zones. Our 2 zones are on Constitution Road and on Harris Street.
The Lutwyche Road drop off zone IS NOT accessible for student/s drop off or pick up until the completion of the renovation project in early March.
As previously communicated, the G Block staff car park area will only be available after hours for those accessing the pool with Sea Wolves or the courts with Sport Up or Tennis programs.
The construction team are providing me with weekly updates and we now have 4 days of work left until completion. Unfortunately these 4 days need to be dry days so we can expect an end of next week completion date.

Halogen Young Leaders Day- Reflections from Senior Leaders
Grace G’s Reflection
On Monday the 24th of February, the WSS student executive leaders met at the Brisbane Convention Centre for the Halogen Young Leaders’ Day. This was an opportunity to hear from experienced leaders and to pick up some tips on leadership.
The day started with a spectacular performance by Dance Curriculum, demonstrating a world-wide dance program that has been taught to approximately 300 000 students world-wide. The students attending were fortunate to then hear from a number of key speakers, including:
- Her Excellency, The Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, The Governor General of Australia
- Ms Kasey Rainbow; Author, Illustrator and Artist
- Mr Dane Zorko; Brisbane Lions Premiership Winning Player and ex-Captain
- Mr Todd Hazelwood; V8 Supercars Driver and current Bathurst 1000 Champion
Our leaders decided to write a small reflection based on advice received from each of these leaders, as can be referenced below.
Her Excellency, The Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn, Governor General
Reflections by Grace G Yr 6
Ms Sam Mostyn is the 28th Governor General of Australia and was nominated for the role by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Ms Mostyn will serve as the Governor General for 5 years.
Ms Mostyn was a gratifying speaker, educating us about the morals she has picked up during her leadership journey. She spoke about how she was the 2nd female Governor General in Australia, and how we should strive to follow tradition, whilst at the same time keeping up with modern problems. Ms Mostyn encouraged us to lead with kindness and compassion, to be inclusive and caring, to be respectful and to listen. One of our most important take-aways was that we need to think about how our actions today will affect the future for better or worse. We heard that to move forward we need to learn from the past be to also be able to listen in the present. Ms Sam Mostyn taught us that to be a leader we should strive to be inclusive to everyone and that your team is your greatest asset.
Todd Hazelwood- V8 Supercar Driver
Reflections by Aiden M Yr 6
Todd Hazelwood, an outstanding Australian supercar driver, recently won the iconic Bathurst 1000. At the Halogen Young Leaders Day, he shared his journey, growing up in a family with limited resources and his rise in motorsport. Todd's key messages to the leaders were: never doubt yourself, fall forward instead of backward, and surround yourself with the right people. His words were very inspirational and will guide the leaders this year.
Dayne Zorko- AFL Premiership Winning Brisbane Lion
Reflections by Charlie M Yr 6
Dayne Zorko has captained the Brisbane Lions and played on their premiership winning team in 2024. His number one message was to not give up on your dreams, because in his youth years of footy, he was not picked from the AFL draft for four years in a row after being captain and best player of his school footy team. One thing that we could put into action at this great school is to get some famous sport stars and to asked them to talk about leadership and teamwork throughout the year. We are looking forward to an Olympian visiting us in March.
Kasey Rainbow- Author and Illustrator
Reflections by Gemma M Yr 6
Some of the key topics that Kacey Rainbow talked about were that "in life, we need to learn to except cliff hangers and plot twists!” I felt that it was very inspiring. Something she also mentioned that stood out to me was that you don’t have to be famous or go viral to be a hero. To be a hero, you can simply inspire people around you or just be a hero to yourself. I thought this was very insightful. Everyone who attended thought the speakers were great and we all learnt a lot from them.

Lisa Heard (Head of Curriculum)
Author Visit: Dr Cameron Stelzer
This Monday, the Year 3 and Year 5 students were lucky enough to engage in writing workshops with award-winning author, Dr Cameron Stelzer. The workshops focused on writing both a narrative and a persuasive text. The purpose of these workshops was to increase student confidence and skills for the demand style of writing required in NAPLAN testing and to generally have fun with the writing process whilst being guided by a professional writer.
Cameron is becoming one of our regular visitors and has now been to our school a number of times. His stories are very engaging as are his workshops. He has a wealth of experience to draw on, having written over 20 books and presents in a very multimodal and entertaining way. If you have a student in Year 3 or Year 5, be sure to ask them all about it.
Prep – Reading and spelling
One of the most exciting moments when starting school is the challenge and thrill of learning to read and write. These complex skills require an explicit teaching approach that align the concepts of phonemic awareness (hearing sounds in words) and phonics (representing sounds with letters). Our whole-school phonics program, Sounds-Write, guides this process to ensure our youngest learners get the best start and immediately begin building confidence and motivation to read and write.
Our lessons require minimal materials, simply a whiteboard, marker and eraser and some letter tiles to build words
So far, we have been learning the sounds a, i, m, s, t, n, p, o, b, c, g, h and we are applying these sounds immediately to words like mat, nip, bag, and hog to practise segmenting the word into sounds and blending them together to read the word. If your child does not know a word tell them to, "Say the sounds and read the word." If they are unsure, model it for them.
Prep homework commenced in Week 5 and excitement levels were at an all-time high as they proudly practised their sounds and read their decodable book. At this stage of Prep, students are not expected to independently read an entire text, but repeated reading and sounding-out of the words is excellent practice.

Prep and Year 6 Big Buddies & Little Learners – A Perfect Match!
Excitement was in the air this week as our Year 6 students met their Prep Buddies for the very first time! There were big smiles, warm welcomes, and plenty of enthusiastic chatter as friendships began to form.
Each week, our buddies will come together for fun-filled activities, including arts and crafts, story time, number games, and outdoor adventures. With their Year 6 mentors by their side, the Preps will learn, play, and discover the Windsor Way in action!
We can’t wait to see these friendships grow and watch our Year 6 leaders shine as positive role models.
Yah it is March and my turn to star in the Calendar. It is on display in the office and if you ever see any of Therapy Dogs Australia social media, they have been using this great photo lately as well.
I have been doing some of the things that my Mum says I do best. Listening to reading (I have unconditional listening ears) and saying hello to everyone I passed. I had a zoomy in the quadrangle the other week and everyone loves to watch me and laugh. Not my Mum so much as I go around and around in circles.
If you ever wonder what I do when we do not have any children in the room take a look at the photo below.
Also, I sometimes spend some time with my friends the office ladies. My Mum says they spoil me too much but I love them and they love me. They even found me a purple ball to match my bandana.
Love Ruby

QLD Schools Library Week Competition
The Competition has now closed and we have selected Layla’s drawing of Songlines (written by Margo Neale and Lynne Kelly) to represent Windsor SS for Prep – 2 and Poppy in 6B for her vibrant drawing of a book displaying a window to the world, this year’s theme for QLD Schools Library Week. Well Done to these two students, best of luck for the state judging.

Book Club Issue 1 delivered
Most of our Book Club orders arrived last week, which saw our dedicated Library Teacher-Aide Mrs Olivieri unpack, check off and distribute twenty-two boxes in one day, all whilst helping classes with borrowing throughout the day. Thank You Mrs Olivieri for always going above and beyond!
Captains Corner
We are in the process of setting up a Captains Corner for our Library captains, Fern and Joshua where they will display some of their favourite books. Students and parents, please feel free to borrow from their recommendations.
Cameron Stelzer Visit
Year 3 and 5 students participated in a workshop on Monday with Dr Cameron Stelzer. They have the chance to order signed books from an order form they received. Their order forms were due in this week. Please head to https://bookpayment.com.au/ to pay for your order. We are hopeful that these orders will be fulfilled by the end of next week.
2025- Positive Student Recognition
The Windsor Way & the revised Student Code of Conduct
In 2024, we reviewed our Student Code of Conduct, as is good practice and a requirement of the Department of Education at regular intervals.
The 2025-2028 Student Code of Conduct is available on our school website, here.
As part of the review, stakeholders helped re-define our ‘Windsor Way’ poster, which consolidates the core values, character traits, social-emotional keys to success and daily conduct that helps us set our students up for success. This is imaged below, and a printable copy, for families that wish to print one for the fridge at home is available here.
Working in line with advice of acclaimed psychologist, Karen Young (https://www.heysigmund.com/) who has spoken to our school community on numerous occasions over the years, alongside guidance from the work of William Glasser (Choice Theory), there have been some adjustments to our code of conduct in line with moving towards a connected approach to recognition. We will no longer have a public badge system for Gold and Silver nor will you see charts in rooms with levels of behaviour on them.
However, we will still take numerous opportunities to celebrate students and provide positive acknowledgement of the values, character traits, keys to success and conduct that we wish to continue to strongly embed across our school.
The most notable and exciting update for 2025 is the commencement of a set of ‘5 Keys’ annual collector cards, which are pictured below.
Teachers will take opportunities throughout the year, to recognise students who are demonstrating the 5 keys to success by making a special presentation in class to students, recording their name on the back and enabling the student to take home their collector card to cherish.
We would love to share some images of families celebrating students bringing home a card during the year by making a photo collage of celebrations, however they may look in your household. If you would ever like to share an image of either one-card coming home, or a completed set, we would love to see them shared via the below email address!
5_Keys_Collector_Card_Celebrations@windsorss.eq.edu.au
Our weekly Gotcha Awards! (including Grill’d Burger Certificates) and You Can Do It Awards on assembly will still be a regular feature. We will continue to celebrate student achievement at our ACE Awards also, which take place at the end of each Semester.
Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey- Term 2
Information for parents and carers
In Term 2, students in Years 4-6 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: (https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey).
You can contact the QEW Survey team by email: QEWSurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.

We reused a piece of fencing to create a trellis to support our new bean and pea bed. Beans and peas are a great crop to use when regenerating the soil as they are nitrogen fixers.
Did you know? ....
Dried leaves are a great addition to compost. They provide a source of carbon which we need double of to the amount of nitrogen. Raking, collecting and wheeling is leaves is a popular job every Wednesday morning.

Social Emotional Learning @ Windsor SS
Supporting our school culture- Key Language for Home and School
The old adage asserts that “It takes a community to raise a child.” At Windsor State School, we have a fantastic community, who are undoubtedly a large part of the reason that we have such wonderful students. It is through the work of all members of the school community, including staff, parents and carers that we are able to have a collective positive impact on the lives of our students.
In order to support the key language and social emotional keys to success that we aim to promote within our students at Windsor State School, we would greatly appreciate the continued support of parents and carers emphasising, reinforcing, recognising and acknowledging the 5 keys to success at home, as we do at school.
As such, we encourage you this week to find an opportunity to discuss confidence, organisation, persistence, getting along or resilience with your child.
The ultimate goals through the embedding of these social emotional keys to success are for all children to achieve to the best of their ability, develop positive relationships and behaviour and experience the highest levels of wellbeing.
Please Check Accounts Weekly for Payments and Permissions
QParents is the main portal for school payments and for school event permissions. The first residential parent listed in One School is invited and the parent who nominated 100% responsibility for fees during enrolment will see any amounts outstanding in QParents (unless you have approached the school to request a split agreement, eg. 50-50 responsibility).
We greatly appreciate those parents who regularly check into their QParents accounts to provide any permissions outstanding and to address any invoices outstanding.

Congratulations to the mighty Windsor Seawolves, winners of the IWO carnival on 23rd February against Ithaca and Oakleigh clubs. It was a tough competition and Windsor worked hard!
Supporting a club through a carnival takes a huge effort. We extend our thanks to parents, swimmers, the Seawolves committee and our wonderful parent volunteers. Additionally, a huge thank you to our chief carnival organiser, Lucinda Kaye who organised our club attendance as well as supporting the overall event operations.
Seawolves End of Season Carnival and 30th Anniversary celebration Saturday 29 March from 1pm at the school pool.
All Seawolves families are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy a snow cone or snack from the canteen while joining in the event. The swimming events culminate in the carnival's age champions. This will be followed by novelty swim events and an evening of celebration with dinner and awards in the hall.
