The sun is shining, and our students’ learning progressions are evident right across our school. Next Tuesday 25th March, teachers will provide parents with an opportunity to share student growth, both academic progress and personal and social capabilities. These parent teacher interviews are now nicely backed up by Windsor’s Show and Shine afternoon to be held on Monday 31st March. Our Show and Shine initiative opens classrooms and allows children to share and talk about their own learning with a parent or trusted adult. The excitement across our school on this afternoon is wonderful to watch.
For those families still moving through the recovery phase of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, please note that Commonwealth Govt website https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/qld-ex-tropical-cyclone-alfred-mar-2025-australian-government-disaster-recovery-payment includes information regarding eligibility for financial support.
Harmony at Windsor
Harmony Week presents an opportunity to teach our children about global citizenship. Our annual whole school parade was brough to life by our students, who confidently shared their stories in front of a large school community audience. The importance of listening and learning about others is our message to students as they grown into an ever-changing world. The theme, Everyone Belongs continues. Please enjoy more photos within the newsletter.
ANZAC Day
The Windsor SS commemoration is always a very special event. Weather permitting, this outdoor school service held on ANZAC Terrace (upper oval) highlights the significance of the day to our students. Any families who do, or have worked in Defence, are invited to contact the school, so that we may acknowledge you. During our service there will be an opportunity for families and community members to lay their own wreath should they wish. We will gather at 9am on Thursday the 24th of April. Thank you to Adam Tull and our sustainability gardening students for adding some Rosemary plants to prepare and enhance our cenotaph. Although its location has changed over the years, this statue is 100 years old this year!
Lutwyche Road Drop off Zone
We are almost there! The weather is keeping us on our toes as the last few days of work continue. We have an official opening date of next Tuesday 25th March. We will also have early access to car parks this coming weekend, if the rain stays away.
Below is a map (you may need to squint to read it) that helps show the flow for traffic from Constitution Road through to Lutwyche Road. It also clearly shows the only entry and exit point for students into our school from this drop off area.
The last two weeks of term one offer many opportunities to come together. I look forward to seeing you at our discos tonight or community Colour Run on Saturday.
Yours in Education
Shona
Parking and Consideration of Others
We know that parking around schools in all metropolitan areas in Brisbane and more broadly, poses a challenge. However, in order that our neighbours are considered and treated with common courtesy, we kindly ask that anyone seeking a park in the streets adjacent to Windsor State School always consider a couple of key things.
1. Please take heed of driveways and leave these spaces clear so that local residents can come and go as they require.
2. Please take heed of all parking signage and avoid parking in no-standing zones
We know that the community appreciate those parents and carers who think about others and show courtesy and respect in their driving behaviours.
If you are an existing Windsor SS family, or live in our catchment, and have a child who will be getting ready to start Prep next year, it is important that the Enrolment Application and supporting paperwork is completed and submitted to enrolments@windsorss.eq.edu.au as soon as possible. Once enrolment paperwork is submitted, we can ensure that all relevant communication and invitations for transition opportunities are received.
Click here for further information and documentation required to enrol at our school.
Out-of-Catchment Applications: 2026 Start Date
Applications for out-of-catchment enrolments for 2026 start open at 7.00am on the first day of Term 2 in 2025, which is Tuesday 22 April 2025. Applications must be submitted via email to enrolments@windsorss.eq.edu.au.

A reminder that students are welcome onsite form 8.30am for supervision in the undercover areas, or can be standing or sitting with parents/carers on school grounds. There is no access to playgrounds before school for any student, unless enrolled and participating in the YMCA before school care programming. This message is reinforced to children throughout the year, but we would also like to take this opportunity to remind all parents and carers that if onsite waiting for the bell with your child, please ensure that they are sitting or standing near you and not on the playgrounds.
Developing Good Character in our Kids- Positive Parenting Article
Parents and carers, in line with the values of Harmony Week, we wish to affirm that in order to develop strong character and make appropriate ethical decisions, kids also need a moral compass and they need practise in how to use it. We can’t always be by their side to guide them in relationships, choices or risk taking, but as their first teachers, we can role model good character and talk about our family values. If our kids know where we stand, they can work out where they do…To read a research-based article on positive parenting, please click here.
Thank You students for sharing- Diversity = Strength
Harmony Week is a very important opportunity to celebrate the strength that diversity brings. The message is clear- "Everyone Belongs."
At our whole-school Harmony Day Assembly on Monday 17 March, we were very privileged to have Bella C, Thomas N, Charlotte H, Ryan S-H, Leo T very bravely offer to step in front of the community and share their proud and diverse cultural heritages with the school community.
They were also joined by Mrs Olivieri and Mrs Burns from the teaching staff ranks, who proudly shared their culture.
The Windsor State School community is supportive, connected and kind. It is also a community in which respect for others is shown daily and Harmony Week helps us consolidate and re-iterate the key message that "Everyone Belongs."

The Windsor Way & the revised Student Code of Conduct
In 2024, we reviewed our Student Code of Conduct, as is good practice and a requirement of the Department of Education at regular intervals.
The 2025-2028 Student Code of Conduct is available on our school website, here.
As part of the review, stakeholders helped re-define our ‘Windsor Way’ poster, which consolidates the core values, character traits, social-emotional keys to success and daily conduct that helps us set our students up for success. This is imaged below, and a printable copy, for families that wish to print one for the fridge at home is available here.
Working in line with advice of acclaimed psychologist, Karen Young (https://www.heysigmund.com/) who has spoken to our school community on numerous occasions over the years, alongside guidance from the work of William Glasser (Choice Theory), there have been some adjustments to our code of conduct in line with moving towards a connected approach to recognition. We will no longer have a public badge system for Gold and Silver nor will you see charts in rooms with levels of behaviour on them.
However, we will still take numerous opportunities to celebrate students and provide positive acknowledgement of the values, character traits, keys to success and conduct that we wish to continue to strongly embed across our school.
The most notable and exciting update for 2025 is the commencement of a set of ‘5 Keys’ annual collector cards, which are pictured below.
Teachers will take opportunities throughout the year, to recognise students who are demonstrating the 5 keys to success by making a special presentation in class to students, recording their name on the back and enabling the student to take home their collector card to cherish.
We would love to share some images of families celebrating students bringing home a card during the year by making a photo collage of celebrations, however they may look in your household. If you would ever like to share an image of either one-card coming home, or a completed set, we would love to see them shared via the below email address!
5_Keys_Collector_Card_Celebrations@windsorss.eq.edu.au
Our weekly Gotcha Awards! (including Grill’d Burger Certificates) and You Can Do It Awards on assembly will still be a regular feature. We will continue to celebrate student achievement at our ACE Awards also, which take place at the end of each Semester.
Lisa Heard (Head of Curriculum)
As you know, at Windsor, we use evidence to inform our understanding of how students learn, which in turn informs how we teach. Teachers have anywhere between 20 and 30 students in front of them at any one time, and that requires that the most effective strategies for that context are used.
Below is the model of memory we use to think about how learning happens (environment, attention, working memory, long-term memory, forgetting), which has been adapted to show how teaching should then occur to accurately reflect the model. This week, let’s take a close look at the Environment. The environment in this hierarchical model, includes selecting curriculum, creating the conditions for learning and securing attention.
Selecting curriculum is mostly taken care of as we have a national curriculum to implement (not all countries have this). However, we do a lot of work in the background to ensure the sequence and delivery of that curriculum is carefully thought through and implemented using the best practices. It comes to us as a set of standards with many teaching suggestions; we then turn those standards into unit plans, lessons and assessments.
Creating conditions for learning is a larger aspect of the classroom than most people might realise. This means ensuring students feel a sense of belonging and feel safe learning, which includes making mistakes, failing, being vulnerable and seeking help. Creating the right classroom climate is something we are very proud of as a school – our teachers have student well-being at the heart of all that they do and work hard to create positive classroom cultures.
Conditions for learning also involves establishing consistent routines so that students have predictability about what to expect day-to-day and can work through classroom tasks with automaticity, creating a smooth flow within the room. It even matters how the room is decorated; displays should be minimally stimulating to avoid distraction (only displaying what is required to assist learning and including a lot of student work), and students should be seated in a manner that is most conducive to learning. This usually means forward facing rows.
The majority of our teaching is explicit and even when students are working independently, in order for them to avoid distraction and to ensure we can secure attention, we seat them so that they are not facing other students or having to turn significantly to see the teacher teach. If students are distracted and/or talking to other students during the direct instruction phase or during independent practice of a skill, they are less likely to engage in the deep thinking required. This is in line with the research that shows that we are not actually good at multitasking. Whilst we may think we can talk and ‘do’, we will actually be doing one thing better than the other (and in students’ cases, this is usually talking). Think about when you are driving with the music blaring or deep in conversation; when you are in an unknown area and you need to concentrate more closely on the traffic and directions, you will usually turn the music down or pause the conversation – that’s because it is distracting your ability to concentrate. This is no different to students trying to concentrate in the classroom, especially the younger students. This is why you will notice our classrooms across the school are set out in rows rather than group formation. Again, it is what the evidence suggests is most conducive to learning. When students need to discuss a topic or rehearse some part of the learning, they ‘turn and talk’ with an elbow buddy or two as appropriate. When they need to collaborate on a group task, desks are quickly turned into groups of four or they may stay that way for a period of time as required. So, even the way we seat our students is based on evidence to give students the best chances at success.
Next newsletter, we can look at more securing attention strategies as well as the importance of considering working memory.
For further information on ‘Environment’ or to follow the evidence, check out the following websites:

Now, let’s take a look at what the Year 3s students have been up to as well as an update on Term 1 Music goings on.
Year 3
Time flies when you’re having fun! Year 3 have had a busy first term adapting to new routines, classrooms and immersing in the curriculum.
The year 3 teachers and students love a story, and in English we been enjoying reading and examining a number of narratives. Comprehending these stories students have been developing an understanding of the narrative structure and how language features and images can add meaning. We had a lot of fun reviewing stories and expressing our opinions about our favourite texts with others. Year 3 were informed and inspired at an incursion with a published author which further developed skills in creating texts for purpose.
Is it living or non-living? This is the question we have been asking in Science in order to group things by their observable features. What better way to put this into practice than to venture outside where the grounds of Windsor SS offer an abundance of both living and non-living things to observe. 3D were lucky enough to catch Mr Logan preparing some off-cuts from the cyclone for replanting. This caused a rich discussion about what an off-cut would need to start the living process.
After a busy week, 3A headed to the garden to wind down and relax. We have been studying ‘living things’ in Science and decided to sketch a favourite plant that we could find. The banana tree and succulents were very popular!
I absolutely LOVE teaching music. I love the way students become engaged in activities such as playing the ukulele, drumming with drumsticks, rhythmic basketball, Auslan sign language and even keeping the beat on a huge piece of stretchy lycra – all while learning important elements of music such as beat, rhythm, and timbre.
Here are some pictures of some of the year levels in classroom music.

Year 5
Did you know that Tokyo is now one of the most visited cities in the world by Australian tourists? That is good news for any of our Grade 5s planning a trip to Japan in the near future because we are learning all about how to order food at a fast-food restaurant. Our students can now confidently order a hamburger or fries (or two!) as well as learning specific Japanese phrases like ‘Let’s eat’ (Itadakimasu) and ‘Cheers’ (kanpai). Perhaps the most useful phrase we have mastered this term is ‘Sumimasen – Excuse Me’, very helpful to get shopkeepers attention.
Year 6
This term the students have explored the very Japanese topic of ‘Mottainai’ – or ‘Don’t Waste It’. We have explored the evolution of Japanese kanji symbols for various nature words, from their picture origins to how they are written today. It was amazing to see the students match the picture to the correct kanji before they were even taught. We have looked at basic forms of kanji that are straight pictographs – kanji symbols that are used to express literal things, which has been great for visual learners. Year 6 students also had the chance to make these characters in play dough which was lots of fun and then apply their knowledge in a scavenger hunt in the Sustainability Garden where Sensei made sweet potato mochi, harvested direct from the garden, for those who completed the challenge.

Not my favourite fortnight of the year. Due to the cyclone and NAPLAN, I have had to stay at home and not come to school. Even though I tried looking my Mum in the eyes and really showing her that I wanted to go to work. I would give great pats at NAPLAN but my Mum says because it is a once-a-year assessment all the children really need to concentrate on what they are doing and not be watching me.
I did get to come for a few days and it was great when some children, who may not be as confident around dogs to start with realise that I am very soft and gentle and really fun to pat. I also attend parent meetings some days with my Mum and the other teachers. Look at me sitting up paying so much attention to what was happening this day. I put myself up on the chair my Mum was not so sure.
Therapy dogs Australia recently used this quote in answer to the question what does a therapy dog do. “Because of a dog’s joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift” (Mary Oliver)
To finish my fortnight off I got to go to one of my favourite parades of the year, Harmony Day. I wore my orange t-shirt and joined in with the theme of "everyone belongs".
Love Ruby

International Women’s Day in the Library
To celebrate International Women’s Day (March 8), we have organised a silhouette guessing competition. The silhouettes represent staff from Windsor SS. Students were encouraged to come along and guess who belongs to each silhouette. We also celebrated this very important day by giving students the chance to draw and use adjectives to describe important women who matter to them. Please come along and have a look at their contributions.
Harmony Week March 17 – 21
This week is Harmony Week. This is a time to celebrate and recognise how our diversity brings Australians together from all different backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging for all. This year, the Library has celebrated Harmony Week by allowing students to ‘find their flag’. Students can identify the flag from the country they were born in and add their name to it. Students are also welcome to borrow books from the Library display to share with their family.

Overdue Books
Please start returning any overdue books. We have sent notes out this week for students with overdue books. Please return them to the green return box inside the Library (on the circulation desk).
Did you know? ...
Students and their grown ups did a great job securing the garden for the storm. On Wednesday Garden club were hard at work putting the garden back to normal. Rebuilding the Indian garden, greenhouse, and bean tepee.
Did you know? ....
When it rains it sounds like worm predators so worms often come to the surface to escape. It is also easier to travel on wet ground for them. So of course, students had to check on the worms on Wednesday. They were right as rain.

In Term 2, students in Years 4-6 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: (https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey).
You can contact the QEW Survey team by email: QEWSurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.
Read LessConsent to Administer Medication Forms
Please note, that if your child requires to have school staff administer medication for them whilst they are at school, you will be required to follow the processes embedded within the below hyperlink for each child and for each medication that requires administration:
Please Check Accounts Weekly for Payments and Permissions
QParents is the main portal for school payments and for school event permissions. The first residential parent listed in One School is invited and the parent who nominated 100% responsibility for fees during enrolment will see any amounts outstanding in QParents (unless you have approached the school to request a split agreement, eg. 50-50 responsibility).
We greatly appreciate those parents who regularly check into their QParents accounts to provide any permissions outstanding and to address any invoices outstanding.
If you need help setting up your QParents Account, we are happy to assist at admin@windsorss.eq.edu.au
For assistance, go to: Q Parents help page: https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/help or phone 13QGOV
